Wine Profile
Tasting Notes
The 2003 Reserve wine exhibits a color of dense ruby-purple with aroma of earth, black cherry, black-berry, light vanilla, altogether sweet, rich and inviting. The flavors are at first sweet and round with red cherries, boysenberries, blueberries, then turn to the dark side with oak toast and notes of charred pie crust and tar. The texture is sweet and soft, with well integrated tannins.
Vineyard Notes
The 2003 vintage provided us the opportunity to create a Reserve Pinot Noir using outstanding barrels from five of our vineyards: Chehalem Mountain, Hawks View, Hyland, Olson and Van John. These selections also encompassed a variety of French oak barrels from neutral wood, twice filled and once filled barrels. The oak level would be equivalent to 30% as “new oak”.
Production Notes
The 2003 vintage was an interesting year that ultimately led to the production of high alcohol wines, with great extraction and very black fruit flavors, with sometimes jamy notes. Bloom occurred on time around mid-June and the set was heavy. A dry hot summer along with low yields, resulting from green harvest, and beautiful fall weather all came together to create intensely expressive fruit. What this all means in terms of Pinot Noir from 2003 is that we have a wine that shows intense ripeness and depth. While there is plenty of structure in this wine it still comes together in a rich, smooth, seamless way that allows it to be powerful yet graceful.
